The Providence Fire Department provides fire protection and emergency medical services to the city of Providence, Rhode Island. The department is the largest fire department in the state of Rhode Island, and the second largest fire department in New England, after the Boston Fire Department.

History

The Providence Fire Department traces its origins back to 1754 when Providence townspeople started a volunteer fire department. The current career department was not formed until March 1, 1854.

Stations and apparatus

As of January 2017 this is an up-to-date list of the stations and apparatus in the PFD.

On December 5, 2015, two engine companies and two ladder companies were temporarily closed due to staffing issues. On January 8, 2017, Engine 4, Engine 5 and Ladder 4 were permanently closed along with the Rochambeau Ave. and Humboldt Ave. fire stations.
